Most of our small towns here in Texas had opera houses. Some were very grand. The Marx Brothers played the Nacogdoches Opera House as they were just getting their start in show biz! The opera house still stands but it's been gutted and is now owned by the local university and houses an art gallery.
The middle of the Civil War seems to be an odd time to open an opera house.
