Dressed For Spring

I haven't posted the flamingo family for a while so I stopped by for a quick picture and was happy to see that they are all dressed up for spring.

Those birds have a spectacular view.

The Train

The Verde Canyon Wilderness Railroad leaves from Clarkdale and takes passengers through some beautiful scenery to the old depot at Perkinsville where it turns around and returns to Clarkdale. A few years ago we took this trip and I posted a series of pictures from the train. You can see the first one of those posts by clicking here.

Early Spring

All leafed out already, and we could still see a cold snap.

Clarkdale Then And Now

The main reason for our recent drive to Clarkdale, Arizona was because we found this old picture from 1927 and wanted to see if we could find these houses. It looks like the houses had just been built when this picture was taken.

As you can see, the area looks different in this picture but these houses are still in use and look much the same as they did 87 years ago.

Driving To Alaska....Whitehorse, Yukon

On our second day in Whitehorse we took a long hike along the Yukon River in Miles Canyon. The river was busy with boats large and small and a few planes.

And then there was the hike in the woods just before leaving Whitehorse that ended in what my hubby told me was a sprained ankle. It looked a bit more serious than that to me but it was his foot, so we left Whitehorse heading for Alaska.

Driving To Alaska...Whitehorse, Yukon

Continuing my weekend series, we have made it to Whitehorse, Yukon, the largest town we have been through in many miles. As you come into town, you can't miss the S.S. Klondike.

Now a National Historic site, this sternwheeler once ran freight along the Yukon River between Whitehorse and Dawson City from 1937 to 1950.

I liked this tall Canadian Mounted Policeman standing outside the High Country Inn in Whitehorse.

Music

I took this shot through a window of a store on Main Street in Clarkdale. The store wasn't open but the instruments were so beautiful, I had to try to get a picture.

Main Street

Main Street in Clarkdale has a quiet, friendly small town look that I have always liked.

Driving To Alaska...Watson Lake

This is the Watson Lake Signposts. If your city is missing a welcome sign, chances are it's here.

That yellow one made us realize just how far we had driven so far.

This sign below explains how it all got started.

And of course, we had to add a sign of our own.

Driving To Alaska...Changing Weather

Another weekend so I am continuing the Alaska Road trip series. Near Hudson's Hope we crossed this beautiful bridge in a light drizzle of rain and later began the climb up into the Rockies.

The rain turned to snow as we approached the summit of Pink Mountain. Luckily we were following a snow plow. By the time we reached the top we were in a white out. Later we heard they closed the road an hour later.

At Laird Hot Springs Provencal Park the sun was shining and it was much warmer. There were some young people taking a dip in the hot water and at one end of the pool the water is so hot that there is a warning sign.

Some offices are located in this attractive building in Clarkdale. This is also the corner where the community swimming pool used to be.

Driving To Alaska...Bad Road

Continuing the Alaska Road Trip, many miles of the Alaska Highway looked like this, or worse. But as we drove slowly along we caught glimpses of deer, elk, bears, moose and  a wolf along the tree line. None of which I was fast enough to get a good picture of.

This is the welcoming sign that let us know we had crossed into Canada's Yukon. "The Magic And The Mystery"  indeed!

Driving To Alaska...Stone Sheep

It is the weekend again so I am continuing the Alaska road trip pictures. In the Muncho Lake area of British Columbia we didn't see many other people but there were plenty of Stone Sheep on the road. They were licking these rocks as we drove up but stopped to look at us driving by. They get some minerals that they need from these rocks.
In this picture you can see how close the rocks are to the road going through the pass. Still plenty of snow around in May.

Those Red Umbrellas

While we were in Clarkdale last month we had lunch under the red umbrellas at this Mexican restaurant called Su Casa. Clarkdale is at a lower elevation than Prescott so even though it's only about twenty five miles away, it was about ten degrees warmer there. It was nice to sit outside to have lunch.

Across the street from the park and right on Main Street, this place is the perfect spot for people watching.

Driving To Alaska...The Long Road Ahead

Several years ago my hubby and I set out on a road trip to Alaska. I decided to break the rules and  post some pictures of the trip on the weekends. I will start out after we crossed the international border and into beautiful British Columbia. All these pictures were taken with a 35mm SLR camera and scanned.

Gassing up at Muncho Lake,
we have many miles of extraordinary
scenery ahead.

We saw this guy guarding the entrance to
Clarke Sawmill. He looked kind of familiar.
